Fundraising Superheroes Episode 19: Gregory Neilsen on Leading a Nonprofit During a Pandemic

In times like this no one is prepared. When training for a job it’s impossible to predict or plan for a global virus outbreak. Gregory Neilsen has been working as a consultant for nonprofit boards and leaders for over a decade. Understanding what it’s like to be in charge of an organization having worked as a CEO himself, he feels that the most important thing to do right now is to give yourself some grace.

"There is no roadmap, there is no manual for how to do this exactly right. I think the challenge is if we hold ourselves to a standard of perfection we may not act at all”. Gregory explains that this is all new to us so we just have to take it a day at a time. "The best that we can do is gather up enough information to make an informed decision, and then act.”

The virus is changing so quickly and a lot of us are working from home and changing how we operate. Gregory suggests switching things up and asking yourself "how do we remain emotionally connected, how do we remain connected to the mission?” Having video calls to or integrating social hours into your schedule are some ways you can bond with your team. As leaders, it’s important to encourage your team to come together to support each other during this time.
